Description: Disorders of the cervical spine pose a substantial challenge to the manual therapist, both because of their clinical complexity and because of the dangers involved in passively moving the neck. Complications relating to injuries of the vertebral and internal carotid arteries, the spinal cord and the spinal nerves/nerve roots following manipulation of the cervical spine have been well documented. In particular, the unique and intricate structure of the high cervical spine perplexes many clinicians and, along with the aforementioned risks, can deter the application of manual therapy procedures in this region. Arguably, cervical spine disorders, more than those of any other structure, require an advanced level of clinical reasoning skill not only to ensure an effective treatment outcome, but also to minimize the likelihood of harming the patient.
